Sunday 3 September - Sea Day

Overnight we'd been sailing north-westwards out of Sydney and into the Gulf of St Lawrence.  The captain explained that there may be times when we couldn't travel faster than about 10 miles an hour if whales had been spotted in the area.

When we woke up we were indeed sailing at that speed, but no whales were to be seen.

The clocks went back an hour last night, but several passengers seemed to have problems at breakfast this morning with no idea what time it was

After breakfast we were booked in on a theatre backstage tour. It was led by a couple of Australian dancers and a Ukrainian acrobat. They answered questions about recruitment, contracts, accommodation and food on board and then took us behind the scenes to see how things worked on the stage, the dressing rooms etc.  It all seemed very cramped.

Our guide, Michael, told us about how slick they had to be changing costumes and explained that dancing on a moving ship can be dangerous and sometimes performances have to be cancelled. He also told us that all crew have to be fully ‘au fait’ with safety procedures which they practise every week so that in the event of an emergency their roles are second nature.

Then we went straight into a fascinating talk about dogs which we thoroughly enjoyed.

We came out to see a flat calm outside as we entered the Gulf of St. Lawrence.

By this time we hadn't eaten for at least 2 hours 😂 so we headed to Cafe Al Bacio for a hot chocolate and a pastry or two.

For our evening meal we were given a seat in the upper level.  We then went to the show featuring the usual song and dance from the ship's company plus an aerialist to entertain us all.

When we got back to our cabin later, we found a red rose had appeared. Elizabeth thought it was a thank you form the man whose bank card she had found in the theatre and who it seems had been frantically trying to track it down.  But no, it was for the cruise line to thank us for our loyalty!
