Friday 8 September - Sea Day

We awoke to a lovely sunny morning and after breakfast we enjoyed sitting out on the deck in the Sunset Bar at the very back of the ship.

We then went to what was described as a general knowledge quiz, but it turned out to be like a US citizenship test.  The first question was "Where in the US is Area 51?" The second question was "Whose face is on a one dollar bill?".  Question 3 was "What is the nickname for the state of California?", the first question to which G knew the answer.  At that point we walked out as it was clearly a general knowledge quiz on all things American and we stood no hope of doing ourselves justice.

The sun disappeared and we hit a dense fog bank with the ship's horn blaring out into the emptiness.  We'd been told that there would be special displays this lunchtime and so there were - all quite a treat.

There was no special pre-dinner event for Elite guests today so we listened again to 'Strings at Sea', got changed for our second and last  'shabby chic' evening of the cruise - that's what we call it although the cruise line calls it 'evening chic'  - which is a dumbed down version of a formal evening.

To be fair, being an older group of passengers on this cruise, many had made a good effort, but there always seems to be at least a few people who think it's OK to turn up for dinner wearing stuff I wouldn't do the gardening in!

At dinner we met another UK couple who came on to the table next to us towards the end of our meal.  They were from Harrogate and both said they had been born in Yorkshire.

After dinner it was time for the show which was called "Soundtrack" and was the second and last performance put on by the ship's performing company.  We have never known a ship's company of performers who have done so little during a cruise. As far as we could tell, they didn't even help out accompanying excursions which does happen on some cruise lines.

One unexpected bonus at this performance was that we all got a free drink as we went into the theatre.
