So we only set off an hour later than our intended departure time as Graeme had managed to leave without his bum bag (akin to leaving his right arm at home!) and when we returned, Elizabeth decided she'd like a longer charging lead for her phone etc.
We then had the now usual horrendous experience on the M1 - speed restrictions every few miles and then leaving the motorway to avoid standing traffic and a minimum 20-minute delay. There must be a better way!
We had our usual pit stop at McDonalds at Watford Gap Services and pushed on towards London.
We finally arrived at the hotel about 3 hours later than we might otherwise have expected and looked online to see if our flight tomorrow was affected by the ongoing fallout from the computer glitch today which has led to the cancellation of flights.
It is, but the delay is now down to less than an hour which, knowing Heathrow, is probably the reality on a normal day anyway - and it is getting less each time we check.
The hotel is fit for purpose and, at £63 a night, we can't complain.
It's right under the flight path of planes taking off and I'm not sure we have double glazing, but hey-ho!
We passed on a meal in the hotel restaurant. Some guests were clearly making their way to the nearby McDonalds while we walked the other way and found a lovely pub nearby - the White Horse - which fitted the bill. That said, a pint of Abbot and a pint of Stella costing £12.80 reminded us that we were indeed in the deep south with prices to match - ouch!
We returned to our room and, as Samuel Pepys used to say, it was "and so to bed".
